Renée Murad and I went to the Lake District for a short holiday. The weather was often less than ideal with some big showers and general rain, but some pleasant sunny spells too. We went on a few walks as well as general driving all around the area. We stayed in a BnB in Bowness on Windermere. It proved to be quite a pleasant location with nearby restaurants and the lake side, which included the start point for a river cruise. See the photos for more...

Photos Friday 27th May 2011 - Day 1

After an early morning dash up the M1 and M6 we arrived in Windermere at about 10:30AM. We promptly found the path to Orrest Head lookout point that starts near Windermere train station. This is the walk that inspired Wainright when he first arrived in the lake district, and given the views at the top it is easy to see why!

At the start of the Orrest Head walk.		The route quickly climbs above the rooftops and into pleasant woodland.

After Orrest Head we looked in Booths and went for tea at Brambles café. Then we moved over to Bowness where we looked around before checking into the BnB.

A view of Windermere was we walk into town.	The waterfront in Bowness, where motorboats and rowing boats can be hired and bigger boats cruise the lake.

So we checked into the BnB at about 2:30pm. After that we decided to drive a circuit around lake Windermere. We drove to Ambleside and then followed the minor roads down the Western shore to Lakeside before returning along the Eastern shore to Bowness. We had a nice meal outside at the Royal Oak pub for supper before retiring for the night.
