Hesperiidae

Chequered Skipper

About 2.5cm across. Slightly bigger but similar shape to Grizzled Skipper. These are some of the rarest British butterflies that I have seen, only known to occur in the Scottish Highlands. They like damp areas where there is running water, boggy ground and shady nectar sources such as bluebells and nearby trees. All the ones I saw were amongst Bracken and Bluebell patches, and also shared their patches with swarms of the dreaded Scottish midges!

Dingy Skipper

About 2cm across. Very hard to follow but well worth it as they are not that common.

There is also a Dingy Skipper in one of the Nymphalidae -> Marsh Fritillary photos.

Essex Skipper

About 1cm long. These look just like Small Skippers, except for their antennae tips which are a darker glossy black colour and sometimes there are additional veins on the forewings and the rear end sometimes looks less well defined.

Lulworth Skipper

About 1cm long. Unique to the Lulworth area. They are similar to Small Skippers but a bit darker and a distinctive pattern on the wings. Unlike Small Skippers this one is a rare one.

Silver Spotted Skipper

Just slightly larger than a Small Skipper and similarly shaped. These are distinguished by the set of silver spots on the underwing, and different patterns on the top wing. Like Large, Small and Essex Skippers, the male has a darker black line towards the front of the top wing, as well as a slightly different pattern.
