Photos Monday 2nd June 2014, Glengorm.

The weather was poor again today. There was a very low cloudbase and frequent drizzly rain. Early on I went down to the Tobermory distillery and bought some Whisky to take home. Then soon enough we set off for Glengorm as the weather improved a bit. It was dry for the wander to the coastline, and cloudbase lifted to the summit of Glengorm (only 264 meters / 866 feet) just as we went up there. As we descended cloudbase dropped all the way down the to the Glen and the masts became invisible again as heavier rain moved in. Good timing...

Tobermory

Early in the day I took a wander around Tobermory in the damp conditions. I also spent time experimenting with the camera from Jack's place as visibility improved.

Glengorm Walk Tearoom to Coast

As the weather improved and dried out for a while we headed out to Glengorm. A minor road / cycle track took us West-Northwest from Tobermory past a Cheese Farm and just below the summit. Currently the masts were in cloud and so the views were not good yet. We carried on to the end of the track where a coffee shop and castle is, and parked up amongst a large patch of Rhododendrons. Then followed a walk out into open grassland. We got a great view of some juvenile Swallows perched on a wire fence. I then carried on alone past some cows and rocky outcrops to the coastline, where the 'Bathing Pool' is. I then doubled back, taking a scramble over the outcrops on the way.

Drive To Glengorm Summit

Once back to the car we backtracked to the Glengorm summit where the masts are. On the way we saw deer and a Female Cuckoo. I got out and tried to get closer to the cuckoo. I found out the hard way that the fence was electric when I got zapped! No harm done though. My hand just tingled for a while...

Glengorm Summit

From the road we drove up a steep track to the summit and parked up by the masts and their supporting buildings. (These masts provide the outer hebrides with their internet connection apparently, via a line of sight wireless signal.) By now cloudbase had just crept high enough for the 800 foot 264 meters) summit to be clear. That afforded us some nice views of Ardnamurchan and Loch Sunart. Then as we departed cloudbase rapidly dropped all the way down to the Glen floor as a heavy shower approached. A good time to retreat back to Tobermory. On the way back we saw logging activity. A lot of the woods are managed for sustainable logging. I guess this part of the forest will get replanted ready for another crop in a few more decades.

Tomorrow the weather is looking more promising after a wet start. We plan to go across on the ferry to Ardnamurchan and go Chequered Skipper hunting.
