Photos Monday 5th June 2017 - Day 4

National Showcaves Centre For Wales

I woke up at 7AM. It was indeed wet and windy as expected. I rested until Renée awoke at 8:30AM. We went for breakfast at 9:30AM. I am glad I skipped veggie sausages this time as they served cheesy ones to Renée. Yuck! The breakfast was once again delicious though and set us up for the day. After returning to the room at 10AM we set off at 10:25AM into the very Welsh weather. We took the simplest fastest route as it was very heavy rain. Renée had a snooze in the car on the way.

A wet start in Llangennith!

We arrived at the National Showcaves Centre For Wales at Dan yr Ogof at 11:25AM. There was a large display of dinosaurs outside which were fun to look at. After buying tickets in the gift shop we first headed across to the Dan yr Ogof cave. This was great fun to explore with the twisty winding passages and plenty of drip stones and stalactites / stalagmites to see on the way.

Then we went up the hill through more dinosaur displays to the Cathedral cave. This cave was much more open and airy with some spectacular waterfalls in the back cavern which was also the location of a wedding platform.

Then up 120 steps was the Bone cave. This was awkward as the access walkway and entrance were very low so I had to stoop a lot only to enter a tiny cave at the end. It was a tad disappointing after the grandeur of the other caves but never mind. Then we exited and headed back down towards the entrance.

At 12:50PM we had a break in the coffee shop. I had some Welsh Cakes and we both enjoyed some cold drinks. We then had a little more of a look around as the rain slackened a bit before exiting through the museum to the car at 1:25PM.

Quadrant Shopping Centre

We decided to go to the Quadrant Shopping Centre in Swansea. The rain stopped on the way which was a nice respite. We arrived at 2:10PM and spent just under an hour in and around the Shopping Centre. There wasn't that much of interest though so we headed back via a petrol station to top up for tomorrow's journey home. The heavens opened again but a steady drive back saw us return to the King's Head at bang on 4PM. Tea and rest were once again very welcome.

Evening at King's Head

At 5PM we went to the bar for drinks. We sat by a nice window table and got the staff to give us this table as our reserved table when they came to put the reservation signs out. Renée ordered an Irish Coffee and I got a Disaronno and Coke. I updated my diary while we drank. Soon it was 6PM and we decided to order dinner. Renée ordered the Welsh beef burger while I ordered fish and chips. They were delicious! We couldn't resist an Eton Mess Sundae and a Dark Chocolate Brownie for dessert afterwards.

At 7:30PM we returned to the room to continue updating the diary and to look at the day's photos. A plan was brewing for tomorrow's trip home. Instead of a direct blast down the M4 we had options to go to the Severn Bridge via the Brecon Beacons, abd via the Cotswolds to the M40 to head back. We would see how we felt in the morning. We retired for the night after 9:15PM.
