We (my best friend and I) arrived together at the queue 1h45m before doors opened to find maybe 100 people already there.
We joined the queue and braved the chilly damp air. Thanks to food to munch, lots of chatting and music to share the time
passed very quickly and we were going in before long. the T-shirts were rather plain and unexciting for £20 a pop so we
didn't bother buying. We made a beeline for the front terrace bar that gives us a great view of the stage every time.
Nice to be back at Brixton academy!
We had to wait almost an hour before the support act, Anneke van Giersbergen, came on stage at 8pm. She was a little on
the light side for me but clearly had plenty of talent and made a very good support act. Perhaps one to check out music
to listen to further.
After another half hour break the Mother Maiden short movie played at 9pm. Then on came Within Temptation to Shot in the
Dark. A key part of their display were large video screens which were pretty cool. I liked some of the aerial footage of
snowy mountains (even if overlaid snowflakes looked rather naff) and other imagery which was all nice. However the visual
element was not a patch on the last gig we both went to, Nightwish (at the same venue) which was a lot richer. But this by
no means detracted from the fact that Within Temptation kicked ass. Sharon's voice was excellent and spot on all evening,
as were the variety of costumes she wore and switched between. A nice dynamic performance with plenty of movement on stage.
There was plenty of audience interaction too which is always great. For me the best bit was Sinead, which I managed to
capture on video (all but the first few seconds atleast). What Have You Done where the audience was encouraged to sing
along, and Mother Earth with more lovely visuals at the end were also noteworthy.
I normally struggle to remember the names of each song, but it's still a novelty having the internet on mobile, and I
managed to find the set list from Manchester Academy 2 days ago, and guess the names of the songs before they started. The
list was correct until after Angels. Then it differed a little with Where is the Edge and See Who I Am playing instead of
Lost and Deceiver of Fools. After a short break after Mother Earth the encore seemed to go all too quickly to end a really
good gig, my first for almost 2 years and one well worth going to. Great stuff!
